Active X is a popular set of tools and utilities that were first developed by Microsoft Corporation and have now been enhanced and added to by many independent developers. The ActiveX plug-in aids in streaming video and audio quickly and effectively, facilitating real-time conversations in chat rooms and social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook, making gaming programs come to life, fueling popular programs such as the suite of Microsoft and Adobe products and much, much more. Locating Active X controls on your computer is easy to do once you know where to look. From here, figuring out which controls are loaded is simply a matter of scanning through the list.

How to Check Which Active X Controls are Loaded

There are two different places available on your computer to check on which Active X plug-ins are loaded. You will first want to ensure that you have a copy of Active X on your computer. To do this, simply visit www.activextest.com, click on "Test Your Active X Now", and follow any prompts or instructions you receive. Once you have completed this step, you are ready to move forward.

You may want to visit two different places on your computer to check which Active X features are downloaded and enabled. You can check your main computer toolbar under the "Internet Options" tab, scrolling through each Active X tool to see whether it is enabled, disabled, or on a prompt setting. You can also search for a specific Active X tool on your computer, or to find a tool that you want to delete or update. This is one of the easiest Active X-related tasks to perform on your computer, and the complete instructions are below.

Internet Options Toolbar

  1. Open your Internet Explorer (IE) browser
  2. Find the menu bar across the top of your computer screen
  3. Click where you see "Tools"
  4. Select "Internet Options" from the drop-down menu list
  5. Click on "Security" Options
  6. Select the "Internet" content zone (by clicking on the green globe)
  7. Click on "Custom level..."
  8. Here, you can begin to scroll through to see the full list of controls that are already present on your computer
  9. You can also choose to change its permissions by toggling between the radio buttons labeled "Enable", "Prompt", and "Disable"

Loaded Active X Controls

  1. Find the menu bar across the top of your computer screen
  2. Click where you see "Tools"
  3. Select "Manage Add-Ons" from the drop-down menu list
  4. Select "Show"
  5. Click on "Downloaded ActiveX Controls"
  6. From here, you can see a full list of which Active X tools have been downloaded and activated on your computer
  7. You can also make changes by clicking on each option to update it or delete it entirely from your computer
